Donald Abbott

Sponsor of the 1937 'Weekender' — San Francisco Bay

Not a designer, as this atlas and several accounts previously implied, but the man who commissioned the Sparkman & Stephens 'Weekender' of 1937 — the boat Stephens Brothers stretched into the Farallone Clipper.

Role
The Farallone Clipper class history describes the starting point as 'the 1937 Donald Abbott-sponsored, Sparkman & Stephens-designed Weekender'
Consequence
This reconciles the two rival accounts of the Farallone Clipper's authorship: the design is Sparkman & Stephens's, Abbott sponsored it, and Stephens Brothers stretched it to 38 feet
Sourcing notes & unresolved questions
  • No biography, dates or profession could be found. He is known only through one sentence in a class history.
  • Not to be confused with the later Sparkman & Stephens 'Weekender 24' (design 1701-C1, built 1965–77), which is a different boat.
